Sponsored by Medtronic and Cleveland Clinic, The Worldwide Randomized Antibiotic EnveloPe Infection PrevenTion Trial (WRAP-IT) involved nearly 7,000 patients in 25 countries. It was the first rigorously designed randomized study to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of an antibiotic-permeated and bioabsorbable envelop during cardiac related surgeries for implants. Approximately 1.5 million people receive a cardiac implantable electronic device worldwide per year. Although these devices have improved and extended lives, infection continues to represent considerable risk for these patients.
