University Researchers Uncover Kidney Disease Gene Far More Pervasive Than Known

Dec 29, 2018 | Gene, Kidney Disease, Nephrology

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, Stanford University and the University of Colorado have discovered that kidney disease risk variants of the gene APOL1, previously known to affect African and African American populations, are also found at appreciable frequencies in Caribbean and Latin American populations. The gene’s impact on these newly identified populations is unknown. The recent findings were described in New England Journal of Medicine as reported in MedicalXpress.
