Healthcare and Medical Apps on Smartphone

The Indiana Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) & LifeOmic Partner to Launch LIFE EXTEND for Hoosier Digital Engagement. Although the market is saturated with health apps, these Indiana-based creators believe the LIFE EXTEND app is different. Why? TrialSite News breaks down this State of Indiana-based update as reported by Inside Indiana Business.

What is the Indiana Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)?

The Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) was founded in 2008 by Anantha Shekhar, MD, Ph.D., then a professor at Indiana University School of Medicine and founding director of the Department of Psychiatry’s Neuroscience Clinical Research Center. Now, in addition to directing the Indiana CTSI, Dr. Shekhar leads Indiana’s largest statewide research enterprise, serving as associate vice president for research and clinical affairs at IU, executive associate dean for research affairs at IU School of Medicine and executive vice president of academic affairs for clinical research at Indiana University Health.

Since 2008, the Indiana CTSI has secured multi-million-dollar grants from the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program at the NIH’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) to build research infrastructure, recruit talent and identify Indiana’s greatest health challenges. Now, with its latest NIH grant renewal in 2018, the institute is seeking to utilize this growth to improve health in Indiana through research.

Who is LifeOmic?

Based in Indianapolis, IN, LifeOmic was founded in early 2016 by serial entrepreneurial Dr. Don Brown and several other key employees from Interactive Intelligence. We believed in the promise of Precision Health but saw a large gap in the current healthcare IT landscape and its ability to fulfill this promise.

Leveraging our cloud and mobile software expertise, we set out to drive better health outcomes for individuals. Fast forward to 2019, our 70+ team members work with some of the largest and most respected healthcare and biotech organizations to accelerate their research and help clinicians deliver better patient outcomes. Their Precision Health Cloud drives innovation in precision medicine and puts data to work for patient outcomes.

The system architecture was created by a team involved with one of the most complex cloud applications on Amazon Web Services (AWS). It was developed as a cloud-first model, using highly secure, scalable design paradigms including a zero-trust security model and serverless computing. Follow the link for an architectural overview.

What does LIFE EXTEND App do?

LIFE Extend is a free app that guides users in adopting the five “pillars of health” that are scientifically demonstrated to stave off chronic diseases of aging and increase lifespan. These five pillars include 1) physical activity 2) nutrition 3) mindfulness 4) sleep and 5) intermittent fasting.

LIFE Extend gamifies the five pillars in allowing users to earn LIFE Points by tracking their healthy behaviors. Users can redeem LIFE Points for rewards from a wide array of participating partners. Users can create and join social “Circles” with friends and family to encourage each other and drive behavioral change. They also join thousands of public circles focused on specific health challenges such as weight loss, cancer, dementia, etc. The LIFE Apps Learning Library offers access to hundreds of scientifically-validated resources covering aging, metabolism, nutrition and more.

The App uses artificial intelligence capabilities of LifeOmic’s Precision Health Cloud, the same platform used at leading medical and cancer centers. A user can capitalize on a wide variety of health information such as electronic medical records and results from blood, microbiome and genetic tests. The platform uses this information along with data from fitness trackers and other wireless devices to make personalized recommendations based on each user’s specific biology. All data is stored in LifeOmnic’s secure, HIPAA compliant, HITRUST, CSF Certified Precision Health Cloud.

Partnership with CTSI for Hoosiers

Indiana Hoosiers will get even more with the LIFE EXTEND app as thanks to the CTSI partnership the app will connect more Hoosiers to clinical trials throughout the state of Indiana—there are about 1,600 clinical research projects in Indiana each year that focus on various diseases. As the push is on nationwide for a more diverse, community-based participation in clinical research the app will help with this process.
