Severe Health Professional Staff Shortages in Ireland Impacts Youth

Aug 12, 2018 | Health Professional Shortage

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), a unit within Ireland’s Health Service Executive, is experiencing severe staff shortages in Ireland—consequently one third of mental health beds for children and teens have been closed.  Primary behavioral and mental health care requires sufficient number of well trained professionals, but at the moment they do not have this number. Because of this shortage, they have been forced to cut many beds.  They do not project this to be a long term issue and are hoping to have more staff in the fall as nurses graduate school, in which case they will appoint two more consultant psychiatrists.
