A patient-led group of 1,900 lung cancer patients and caregivers in 50+ countries called ALK Positive teamed with a global lung cancer advocacy and education organization called G02 Foundation for Lung Cancer to fund two-year, $500,000 Research Collaboration Grant to two renowned lung cancer researchers dedicated to overcoming treatment resistance.
Purpose of Grant
The team announced via a press release that they are awarding this grant to fund research to help break down barriers to successful lung cancer treatment and to identify new treatments. The two came together in 2019 to raise funds for the grant.
ALK+ Lung Cancer
Patients with ALK+ lung cancer benefit from targeted therapy medications. Still, drug resistance ultimately limits this benefit as most patients will develop progressive diseases within one to three years of treatment.
The Principal Investigators
The awards go to two recognized lung cancer experts to serve as principal investigators, including the following:
· Dr. Trever Bivona, associate professor of medicine at the University of California – San Francisco
· Dr. Christine Lovly, associate professor of medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
The newly funded study will explore if new combinations of targeted therapies can delay or prevent treatment resistance. To make lung cancer a chronically managed disease, this research embodies the grassroots, patient, and advocacy-funded approach that represents a vital force in the fight against cancer.
ALK Positive—a group of highly motivated, passionate, and dedicated ALK-positive patients and their caregivers—wants to drive change in the ALK lung cancer space. ALK Positive members are committed to raising funds for research to increase ALK-positive lung cancer patients’ survivorship. The three tenets by which they live are information, support, and empathy. ALK Positive members uphold these by providing information about ALK-positive lung cancer to each other, supporting one another around the globe to improve members’ physical and emotional well-being, and having empathy with each other because they share their lung cancer journey.
G02 Foundation for Lung Cancer
Founded by patients and survivors, GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer (formerly the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and Lung Cancer Alliance) transforms survivorship as the world’s leading organization dedicated to saving, extending, and improving the lives of those vulnerable, at-risk, and diagnosed with lung cancer. We work to change the reality of living with lung cancer by ending stigma, increasing public and private research funding, and ensuring access to care.
