Oregon Health Science University (OSHU) experienced a mass departure of cardiologists in 2018. In 2017 the OHSU heart transplant program experienced a disturbing number of patient deaths—leading to the deaths of twice the number of patients that analysts would expect. The OHSU went from a well ranked to one of the worst ranked providers for heart transplant services.

Molly Harbarger writing for the Oregonian/OregonLive reports that every transplant center in the United States must submit report outcomes to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. The July 2019 report reveals that those who received a heart transplant at OHSU Hospital in the last couple years are at a 67% higher risk to die in the first year after the operation than those patients that had the surgery done at other comparable institutions.
