As reported in Optics.org, a European research consortium, including medical device manufacturer Medtronic, has developed a prototype laser Doppler vibrometry system that measures arterial stiffness, a serious risk factor for undiagnosed cardiovascular disease. The €3.6 million CARDIS project is part of the Horizon 2020 effort, organized by silicon photonics specialist IMEC in Belgium—it runs until the end of January 2019. Other key participants include:

  • Ghent University, Belgium
  • Tyndall National Institute, Ireland
  • Queen Mary University, London
  • University of Maastricht, Netherlands
