HistoIndex and the Institute of Liver & Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi, India have jointly launched a Centre of Excellence (CoE) to aid diagnostics and clinical trials focusing on NASH.
What is the CoE?
The CoE is HistoIndex’s first Genesis Imaging Service (GIS) partner focusing on NASH. Located in India, GIS joins provider and research site ILBS’ global network of medical, academic and referral laboratory partners who are involved in comprehensive clinical and scientific studies on NASH and other chronic liver condition.
Integrating HistoIndex’s AI-based digital pathology expertise and ILBS’ superior position as a national clinical and research institute for hepatology—will be recognized as a top notch clinical and research facility that will ultimately benefit the treatment options of patients afflicted with NASH or similar liver conditions.
NAFLD is emerging as the most common amongst liver diseases in India, where 1 in 4 adults suffer from fatty liver disease. The true prevalence is even higher and often these remain undiagnosed because of lack of any clinical symptoms. A modern lifestyle with high-calorie diets and less physical activity have resulted in an exponential increase in NAFLD in the Indian population. NAFLD in India is seen in a substantial number of physically lean and normal weight Indians as a higher insulin resistance and higher triglycerides in blood, making them more susceptible.
Lead Investigator ILBS
Professor Shiv Kumar Savin, Director of the ILBS noted “ILBS is constantly working towards the mission of developing a facility with international standards, which consists of a comprehensive modern set up for diagnosis and treatment, and an advanced center for the dedicated research and training in the field of liver diseases, including liver transplantation, gall bladder, biliary diseases, and allied specialties. We are pleased to collaborate on the CoE in SHG imaging, which will be the first of its kind in India with immense potential to serve our country’s healthcare sector.”
Who is HistoIndex?
Founded in 2010, they are a MedTech spin-off company from the Institute of Biotechnology and Nanotechnology (IBN), Agency of Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) in Singapore. They are involved in the provision of optical medical imaging systems and services to aid pathologists in diagnostics, clinical trials and research studies for the assessment and staging of diseases.
Their focus is on the accurate assessment of NASH, a silent chronic liver disease that is linked to unhealthy lifestyles and metabolic syndromes. Their imaging systems—which function on Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) and Two-Photon Excitation (TPE)—have opened doors towards new medical standards that benefit clinical research, accelerate pharmaceutical drug development and enhance clinical diagnostics for NASH and other chronic conditions.
Who is ILBS?
The Institute for Liver & Biliary Sciences has been established by the government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi as an autonomous institute, under the Societies act. The mission of ILBS is to become a dedicated international center of excellence for the diagnosis, management and advanced training and research in the field of liver and biliary diseases. The first phase of ILBS is already functioning having 180 beds, 74 of which cater to intensive care unit (ICU) beds.Source: Yahoo News
