Pharmaceutical logistics company Marken recently acquired three European logistics companies as the UPS Inc. business unit expands its logistics footprint into Italy, Austria and Hungry. Based in Research Triangle Park, NC, the firm has acquired Italy’s HRTL, Austria’s HETO and Hungary’s Der Kurier.
Who is Marken?
Marken is a clinical logistics company that is owned by United Parcel Service (UPS) Inc. Marken maintains the leading position for Direct to Patient services and biological sample shipments, and they offer a state-of-the-art GMP-compliant Clinical Supply Center network and logistics hub in 48 locations around the world for clinical trial material storage and distribution.
Marken manages more than 900 staff and 55,000 drug and biological shipments every month at all temperature ranges in more than 150 countries. Additional services include biological kit production, ancillary material sourcing, storage and distribution, shipment lane verification and qualifications, as well as GDP, regulatory and compliance consultancy. UPS completed its acquisition of this clinical trials logistics global player in December, 2016.
Who did they Acquire?
The three firms just acquired, reports DCVelocity, maintain offices in Milan and Rome Italy, in Vienna, Austria and in Gyor (near Budapest) Hungary, to deliver 7,000 clinical trial shipments per month. The purchases bring Marken’s total network of sites to 51 including 10 clinical storage depots that meet the industry’s GMP standards.
Expansion into Central and Eastern Europe
These acquisitions further strengthen Marken’s position in Europe generally, and central Europe specifically. This is an important region for sourcing of drug manufacturing, particularly drugs which are manufactured in a sterile format. Central and Eastern Europe also represent strategic locations for patient recruitment activities. With the acquisition, Market’s biologic sample services become a more relevant and impactful force.
