The BC Cancer Foundation helps move the dial on cancer research and care in British Columbia. And this support is surely important as one in two British Columbians will face cancer in their lifetime reports Coast Mountain News. The expert investigators at BC Cancer break down cancer in the labs and in the clinics and work hard to change the outcome for thousands of families impacted by cancer.
A Message from the Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Kim Chi, chief medical officer at BC Cancer reports that donor support plays an ever more vital role when it comes to the latest cutting-edge research and breakthroughs in cancer care. He commented, “We’ve made great strides in advancing cancer care—people are living longer and there are more people getting cured from their cancers than ever before.” Dr. Chi emphasized “This would not happen without donors.”
Personalized Onco-Genomics (POG) Program
The POG Program is a clinical research initiative that’s embedding genomic sequencing into the diagnostic and treatment planning for patients with incurable cancers. Funded by the BC Cancer Foundation donors, the POG Program is changing the way cancer is diagnosed and treated, proving that genomics—the study of the human genome—can transform cancer treatment and therapies.
Michelle Reilly has benefited from this program. She was diagnosed with a devasting Glioblastoma Multiforme in September, 2018. After the diagnosis, Michelle was enrolled in the POG Program where a sample of her tumor was analyzed. The results revealed an innovative treatment option: an immunotherapy clinical trial that would be infused once every two weeks.
Initially on the new treatment Michelle exhibited great progress, with her tumor shrinking. However, several months later the cancer resurfaced. Regardless, Michelle has incredible courage and fortitude and her mother Carla stands by her side—both are optimistic Michell’s team will once again use crucial pieces of information from her POG analysis to provide her with another treatment option. Carla, Michell’s mom noted, “For me, the science and advancements make me really hopeful for the future—even if it doesn’t pain out for Michelle, we feel it’s all worthwhile for future pediatric patients.”
