Artificial Intelligence gets it Wrong: IBM Watson Provides Unsafe Cancer Treatment Advice

Jul 28, 2018 | AI in Clinical Research, IBM Watson

Angela Chen of The Verge reports that “IBM’s Watson supercomputer gave unsafe recommendations for treating cancer patients,” according to documents reviewed by stat.  See link.

Watson apparently had fallen short of its expectations on several occasions. Chen noted that IBM partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2012 to diagnose and treat patients.  She reports that according to IBM documents “the supercomputer has frequently given bad advice, like when it suggested a cancer patient with a severe bleeding be given a drug that could cause the bleeding to worsen.”  One physician at the Jupiter Hospital in Florida told IBM executives, according to the accessed documents, that “this product is a piece of shit!”
