Few realize that rare diseases in the United States affect 30 million Americans. This represents as many people as are affected by type 2 diabetes. However, as Susan Boswell of Fabry Disease News reports, only 5% of the estimated 7,000 rare diseases known to science have cures or even treatments approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This paucity of care must change. Recognizing this fact, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has organized Rare Disease Dayan all day event raising awareness about rare disease, its impacts and the dedicated research professionals, groups and companies seeking cures.
